A winner and a quick tutorial

And for the rest of you, I'll show you a handy little finger-pincushion tutorial:

Start with a 4,5" inch square (I used a 5" square, and it turned out just a little too big)

Fold it into a triangle, with right sides together.

Stitch along the open edges, leaving a little gap for turning and stuffing.

Turn, and fill stuffing through the little gap, stuffing it firmly in the middle, and leaving the sharper points unstuffed.

Blind or slipstitch the oppening together.

Gather the two sharp points making them slightly ovelap.

Stitch them together forming a ring

And there you have a fancy little pincushion always nearby.

Hello again...

Well, hello there....
Long time no post... I'm sorry for leaving you alone for so long! But I've been so busy these past months. I had finals in June, a birthday in May, and in between school, kids and everyday life, time has just flown by.

Speaking of May, it was my month in the Bee Europa, I asked my fellow bee members to make a sort of strip stacking block, using Erin Mcmorris' Wildwood fabric.
And here are the result so far:

I also had my fist final in school, it lasted about a month, and consisted of several different steps, that I won't bore you with here. But I am going to show you the final product:

A blouse I designed, made pattern for, embroidered and sew. (I got a good grade by the way :-)

Afterwards, Laura and I went on a long weekend to London. We had such a great trip, just the two of us.

We went to the wonderful Victoria and Albert museum, where I could have spent an entire week. It just so happened that they had a great exhibition about quilts, that was very good.

They even had some special edition fabrics that I couldn't resist:

We also went by several different fabric stores carrying Liberty of London fabrics, and I just might have went a little overboard in fabric shopping, but how often do one get to go too London right ;-)

And for those of you readers who's still here despite my recent blogsilence, and for those who made the end of this post, I'm going to share some Liberty love:

The tale of two quilts.

Phew the last month just flew right by; I can’t believe it’s almost May.
Even though I haven’t been around my blog for quite a while it doesn’t mean I’ve been slacking…
In fact I’ve finished two quilts… two!!

The first one is my giant hope valley quilt for my in-laws.
It came back from long arm quilting a couple of weeks ago, and I finally did the binding last weekend. So here it is:

I love the way the quilting turned out.

here’s a close up:

The other quilt I finished is one that I have been procrastinating for a long time. I had a hard time deciding on a back for this one, but then we had another screen printing class at school, where we were to design an ornament and put it in a repeat pattern.

And the perfect backing fabric was born.

I must say that I really love this quilt, both front and back.

Finally I’ve joined the urban home goods swap over on flickr, and here is what I’m thinking of sending my partner:

Aqua, red, linen placemats. I think it should be right up his/her alley.

Oh and by the way, I'm featured over on Amy's blog today... how cool is that :-)

a bird in the hand.

Or my adventures in fabric print and design.

But first, you may remember the embroidery pattern I made inspired by a Korean wedding kimono, well after many hours I finally finished it:

It's the first big embroidery I've made and I really learned alot from doing it. The fabric has pulled in some places, and some of the stitches are a bit too long, but all in all I like it.
Laura and I have decided to use it for a dress she can wear to my sisters weeding in May.

I used the same inspiration in a silk dye and screen printing course at school. But here I only used the bird motif.

First I did alot of testing both with ground colours, pattern layout and howmany times the dye were to be brushed through the frame, it's a really time consuming procedure because you have to dry, damp, wash and iron the fabric between each routine.

I ended up dying and printing two pieces of fabric measuring about 1 square meter. They are far from being perfect, but if used as scarfs where all the flaws are less visible I think they look ok.

I also uploaded the pattern to spoonflower to try it out. The colors turned out pretty much as I had hoped, but I was quite surprised at how small the bird was (the original drawing is on the left)
It nedds some correcting; there are some streaks I hadn't noticed at first (I don't have photoshop or illustrator and made this using paint and picnik)

But it's quite fun to have some fabric I myself have designed, and I allready have ideas for other designs...

Finally I really have been lucky in both the doll quilt swap, and the pillow talk swap.

More hope valley

I had some time of last week, and instead of working on projects already in the works (and collecting dust in the closet), I started a new long overdue one...

Shortly before Christmas my in-laws bought a holiday appartment, and being in the Christmas spirit (or because the punch were spiked) I offered to make a quilt for their new home away from home, an idea they were really thrilled about.

But I must admit my palms got a bit sweatty when my mother in law asked for a king size quilt...

Thankfully she fell in love with a daisy chain quilt pattern, which would come together quite easy.

I suggested the blue and grey colortone of hope valley, and the plan was a succes, except for the part of me sewing it... I simply have not had the time before now.

It's made with 9" ninepatches and 9" squares of white kona cotton.

After this picture were taken I added both a checkered border and an extra white border. It ended up being 108", and is by far the biggest quilt I've ever made (and will continue being just that in quite along time...)

I decided to have it longarm quilted, since I couldn't imagine this giant fit in my sewing machine.

I chose this chantilly lace pattern, and really look forward to see the final result.

In the meantime I'll play with the leftover blocks, I'm thinking maybe a matching baby blanket, Marie has said she really wants to spend the night at her grandparrents. (well actually she said: dabadesu...muu, but I'm certain she meant the other...)

The first will only go 400 yards down the road, it's a lst minute birthday gift for my sweet sister.

Using Anna-Marie Horner's little folks voile, I made a 40" x 40" inch square and folded it in half and stitched down the edge.

The next two will cross the North Sea

This one will fly across at least one ocean... As part of the pillow talk swap

It's made of 1" x 4" inch Hope Valley strips, and white Kona cotton. One side made in cool colorway and the other in warm colorway... It may be symbolic, but you never know :-)

The final one is my rainbow doll quilt for the DQS8, this is a sneak peak at the back...

it will also have to travel through a higher altitude :-)

This week I don’t have any fabric to show, but I do however have something I have been working with all week:
Copic sketch markers.

In the week before Christmas I went on a fieldtrip with my school to the National museum of Denmark, to get inspiration for an embroidery pattern.
Besides a lot of historical Danish artefact, it also contains a lot of effects from cultures all over the world.
From this trip we were to pick an item to be inspired from and do a study about

I fell completely in love with a traditional Korean bridal kimono, I’m sorry for the bad picture, but it was really hard to take one without lights being reflected.
The embroidery depicts bird Phoenix with chicks and symbolizes life, resurrection and fertility.

I did some research on the subject and came up with the idea of a dragon and a phoenix, symbolizing ying-yang, male-female, water-fire and so forth.

I coloured it in different ways, trying to decide the final layout.
I got a bit sloppy in the last one (and a bit dizzy from the marker fumes…)
Not yet sure which one to pick.

I’m going to sew it up on dupioni silk with silk floss.
The final project isn’t due until March 18’th, but I think I know how my evenings until then will be spent.

swapping shopping bees

January were Monika’s month of the Euro bee, in she asked for squares and stripes made in the wonderful shirt fabric she had sent.
At first sight an easy task, but she had asked for it to be measured in cm, and even though I use the metric system for everything else, it was somehow difficult to use it for quilt making… Go figure :-)
I also signed up for the DQS8 over at flickr and have been assigned with a secret partner with a love for wonky houses…

I spend hours trying out different fabric for the houses, it was really hard to find a combination that clicked, the rainbow fabric came together quite easy.

I used lecien honeycomb dots for the binding, which I think frames it quite well.

I’m keeping the back as a (hopefully) pleasant surprise…

On a different more serious note, I hope you’ll consider shopping in the crafthope etsy shop to support Haiti; I bought two wonderful softie patterns from bird and little bird

A start and a finish

But not of the same project

First the finish:
A dress for Marie using Anna Marie Horners new flannels, it’s so soft and easy to work with, and Tula Pinks aqua ladybugs.
In Danish a ladybug is called a “Mariehøne” which means Marie-chicken, so I figured it was a perfect choice.

Second the start of a new quilt.

When Amy Butlers new fabric line LOVE first was released I honestly wasn’t sure whether to like or not, the patterns and colors were very different from what I’m usually drawn too. But when I saw blueblossomgirl's circle quilt on flickr I knew I wanted some.

As you probably remember I used a large portion of it for my sisters Christmas present, knowing that this fabric would be right up her ally. But there were a lot of fabric left that I didn’t know whether to put in my scrap bin or back in my stash.

So I started cutting it up instead, using Marti Michells drunkards path templates. The big circles were easy to cut and piece, but the small templates were quite slippery and harder to piece, therefore some of theme came out a bit wonky and more oval shaped.

I ended up with 14 big circles and 23 small, and very little fabric to spare, I hope to squeeze another small circle out of the scraps.

I’ve been trying different layout styles and am not sure which way to go from here. The circles don’t stand out as much I had hoped, but I guess that was to be expected when it was cut and sewed without any sort of plan.

Maybe some sort of solid sashing would help, I just made an order for some kona solids, and I think I’m going to wait and see what happens with that.

And even though it has no reference for to this post I want to show you my new rug, we just got it yesterday, and I love it so much, it’s so colourful and cherry. It’s from the Danish Design Brand Hay in case you are wondering.

I want to use this first post in 2010 to thank you for your thoughts, comments and support.

This past year has been such a great and creative one for me, I haven’t finished as many quilts as I had hoped but I’m bursting with ideas for quilts to finish in the New Year.

This weeks Sunday stash is 3 new books and a calendar. The calendar is such a great idea filled with sewing tutorials from numerous talented bloggers,

I cheated a little and have already looked through it and found some have to do things.

And the Quilts’ baby book is very inspiring and very well written! I can only recommend this two. I have only glanced at the other books but they sure look promising too.

Speaking off books, I made a book case wall hanging using a pattern from Fun quilts modern quilt workshop book. I’ve promised Kristoffer he could hang it in his office.

On a different note, I finished my pillow cover and have sent it off to my secret partner;

I hope he/she will like it.

I have to admit that I think it turned out pretty ok :-)

My Euro bee quilt top

September was the first month in the Euro bee,

and it was also my month too send out fabric and instructions

I received a total of 19 blocks from the other 11 members,

and added just one block from myself.

And here is the result, I know I’m biased but I love it!

I love the fabric, the layout, the colors and just everything!

Swaps and bee's

This week I finally got some time to do some patchwork sewing. Time seems to fly by around here; there isn’t much time in between school, children, coocking and so on… So it was really fun to play with some fabric.

The first is a Euro bee block for Rita. She sent some gorgeous fabric and wanted a wonky log cabin, I’ve never done one before but it was fun trying.

The second is for the pillow talk swap, where my secret partner had revealed a love for hexagons, so I tried this layout, it’s been awhile since I did hexagons so the Y-seams where a bit tricky, I’m still debating if I should give it another try :-)

This is my entry for Amy’s online quilt festival.

My favourite quilt was finished during the summer.

I’ve been trying to take some new pics of it, but there isn’t enough light.

So you’ll have to do with the old one.

It’s a regular nine-patch that I made in Crazymomquilts-quiltalong.

I think this is my favourite quilt because it’s a colorway quilt (which I love) and because it’s made entirely of scraps from other quilt projects,

in that way I can recall other quilting projects when looking at it.

small projects of the week

This Sunday was spent making these six coffee cup cozys,

using this tutorial from houseonhillraod.

I made them for Kristoffer to use in his office. They are made with Amy Butler’s Midwest modern fabric, and came together quite easy, but maybe a bit girly

Small projects sunday stash

A little while ago, this beautiful parcel arrived at the door.

In case you don’t know it’s Denyse schmidts county fair line.

I simply love these colors and prints.

I have already brought some of it to good use, I made two box bags using this tutorial.

I’m using one as a pencil case, and the other for my sewing gear.

I also made a shoulder bag using Amy Butlers Weekend traveller bag pattern, I can highly recommend the pattern, it’s easy to follow, and have some very cute details.

I'll huff and I'll puff...

…And I’ll stuff.
Or the story of how my dinner plate became Billy the Bat.

It started when I wanted to make an owl. I’m not very good at freehand drawing and figured I had to have some sort of shape I could trace around.

My dinner plates fitted just perfect.

Afterwards followed a series of testing and changing of the original shape.
But nothing seemed to work just right

Then the last testing spawned a new idea.

And after another testing, Billy the Bat was born.

I think he is very cute, the next one is gonna have a bit smaller wings, and embroidered teeth instead of felt ones.

But all in all I’m quite pleased with my first pattern development.

The last of the summer reruns

Wow, the summer sure did fly by, I didn’t finish as many quilts as I had hoped,

but I did managed to finish some.

I had almost forgotten about this quilt, and found it while I was cleaning up my fabric cabinet.

I don’t know why it took so long to finish because it came together quite quickly in the end.

It fits the ending of summer just perfect, since the colours and prints has a felling of fall to it.

I’m experimenting with different batting trying to find a favourite,

and figured that a cotton/wool blending would be just perfect for this

. I didn’t like working with it, since it was very slippery
and made it hard to avoid wrinkles on the back.

But I think the end result is quite cute, very retro and perfect as a baby blanket.

Otherwise there really is allot going on around here. Marie turned 1 last Tuesday, and started day-care, we are having a party for her tomorrow. My maternal leave is over and I have returned to school, which is extremely exciting, but also steals away my quilting time. (Not that I’m complaining, I’m going to sew a lot in school, how lucky can one be!!)

So I’ve decided that September is going to be a small project month, I’ve been wanting to do various little projects for a long time and now seems like a perfect time to do it.

This is Dottie Daisy, and she is just the cutest little girl bug.

Christy from sweet tidings sent her to me as part of our bug swap.

This is Caramella. She is afraid of flying so I had to make her a little friend that could hold her hands, when she was sent all the way to the Philippines. I hope you like them Christy.

And because I had so much fun using Rebecca’s bug pattern,

I just had to make another little fellow.

Speaking of Rebecca from Blinking Flights, she is having a Pay It Forward thing going on at her Etsy shop where if you are lucky you can get one of her softies for 50 cent.

I was the lucky buyer yesterday, and I really look forward to be adding Dot to our family.

Busy as a bee

Well I haven’t been but the other members of the Euro bee has.

I’ve joined my first bee and was assigned with the first month. I sent out my fabric and instructions just before I went on vacation Saturday before last.

And already there are some amazing blocks popping up in the flickr group. I’m really excited about them, and get butterflies in my stomach every time there is a new pic.

Since we’ve been on vacation I haven’t been doing any sewing, but I brought along some embroidery supplies including patterns from Polka dot bunny. I’m thinking about using them for a fairy tale wall hanging, mixed with Heather Ross far far away,

and other fairytale themed fabric.

When returning from vacation Nicole from polka dot bunny

had sent me this great package filled with great goodies.

Thank you Nicole, it really made it so much better to return to normal life again.

one a day rainbow

I finished the one-a-day quilt, and it turned out great. I did a really simple grid pattern, and for the binding I used some of my favorite fabric ever. A. Henry raindrop stripe, in both the light and the dark color way. I think it’s the best quilt I’ve made yet.

About a year ago I made my first quilt which was also a nine-patch. A lot has happened since then, I’ve learned to make a decent binding, to make mitered corners (well.. sort of, they are still a bit tricky), the importance of accurate seam allowance, I’ve “met” so many other great bloggers from whom I’ve gotten so much inspiration and encouragement.

I’ve discovered and developed a love (read addiction) for fabric,

but most important I’ve had so much fun!

I’m so thankful for having stumbled upon the worldwide quilting community. And I look forward to explore, improve and learn more about patchwork, quilting and sewing.

I'm in love

I finished the one-a-day nine patch quiltalong top, and I love it.

I think it's going to be favorite quilt.

I sashed it with white 1 inch strips, because I wanted the blocks being close together

in this way the colorway idea seems to be more obvious.

I made long strips from the leftover squares,

and Marie was very helpful in arranging them...

I finished the quilt with another 1 inch white border, but I must have erased it,

because I can't seem to find anywhere on the computer or in the camera.

But it looks great, you'll have to take my word for it :-)

I think I'll quilt in a relative simple grid pattern since I really don't want to ruin it, and sometime simple is better.

And I signed up for a bug softie swap Rebecca from Blinking flights is hosting, I've been admiring her bugs for quite some time and she's been kind enough to make the pattern free for download.

I've been signed up with Christy from Sweet tidings, she said she liked polka dots, and when looking at this sunday stash I should be able to find some dots :-)

And I won a giveaway! Nicole had a great giveaway on her blog polkadotbunny, with some lovely vintage embroidery patterns and some floss and fabric to go with it. Nicole makes some really cute embroidery patterns, wich you can find in her etsy shop. She also has a Flickr group where you can see the patterns all stitched up.

sunday stash # 10 Australian inspiration

This week I’ve wanted to show and recommend two new acquisitions.
They are all written by some extremely talented ladies from down under.

One of the first quilting books I ever bought was “Material obsession” by Kathy Doughty and Sara Fielke. And they are truly some of the most innovating and inspiring quilters out there.

So of course I had to get their new book and it’s just as great and beautiful as the first.

The other book is Melanie Hurlston’s “Kaleidoscope”. Ever since I made the Peanut elephant softie I’ve fallen in love with the patterns from “Melly and me”. And if you are into making softies there are some really cute ones in this book, the Koala bears somehow slipped their way in the basket, but you can’t really stay mad at them for doing so when they are being so cute

Summer reruns

It’s done. The ORBC-quilt is done. It took about nine hours to quilt. I’ve never quilted anything that big or quilted anything that heavily, but I love the result. The texture in this quilt is so great, and it’s hard to stop stroking across it with my fingers. It’s also the first time I tried not to prewash the fabric before piecing it, I think it crinkles better when washing afterwards, but I don’t like the feel and smell of the fabric when sewing and quilting it unwashed, so I think I’m going back to prewashing

After finishing the ORBC quilt, the “on the spot” quilt seemed so easy, and it ran through my sewing machine like a knife trough hot butter.

It’s been such a kick to get some UFO’s out of the way, and I think I’m going to try and get some more WIP’s done. So hopefully there will be more reruns throughout the summer.

Copycat

Have you ever seen a quilt and known that you had to copy it?

Well I have, many times. But this time it came out of the blue…

I’ve had a bunch of blue Kaffe Fasset prints in my stash for a long time, it was some of the first fabric I bought online (Boy, a lot of water have been running under the bridge since then!) and I had planned to use them for a lady in the lake quilt. But then I saw this quilt, Rita from redpepperquilt made a while ago, and I just loved how the cotton/linen blend made the printed fabric light up. So I decided to make a very similar one.

I never tried to make a quilt with linen, so I was a bit anxious to use it.

It’s not a favourite, but it sure isn’t the last time I use linen.

I made this quilt for my sister and her husband a couple of weeks ago,

but I haven’t gotten around to posting about it before now.

Otherwise sewing and bloggin has been a little slow, I think maybe because of the heat.
And because Marie is teething again (who needs more than two teeth anyway?)
I’m not finished quilting my snippets quilt from the ORBC quilt along,
but I’m getting closer.

Quilting along

I’ve started quilting the ORBC quiltalong quilt,

and it’s slowly coming along, I’m ¼ of the way.

There’s still at least 6 hours quilting left,

and I decided not to work on anything else before this is done.

But with a million or so degrees outside,

leaving us all hot and sweaty,

I don’t think it will be finished before sometimes next week.

I’m quilting in “wonky” straight lines, with random spacing

and in alternating directions.

I think it enhances the pattern in a good way,

and give the quilt a great texture.

Look who came to visit.

It’s Peanut the wee elephant.

He was greeted with smile and laughter and hugs and kisses.

I think he decided to stay.

Hopefully his family will soon join him.

He’s got a wife (Hazel) and two girls (Almond and Acorn)

The big one (Almond) looks a lot like her mother,

but the little one (acorn)takes after her father,

they certainly got the same ears.

I wonder where I got my inspiration...

I finished my versin of Crazymomquilts one a day nine patch quilt along

I made 65 ninepatches, but only 60 made the final cut.

Now it just needs sashing.

I was lucky enough to get my hands on some of Denyse Schmidt Flea market fancy, so I used some of that too.

Otherwise, the sewing has slowed down here, school will be out in a week, and I spent more time outside enjoying the weather.

two in a row coaster tutorial, part 2

For this coaster you’ll need
- five pieces of fabric 5 inch square
- one piece of fabric 4 inch square
Fabric number 5 is the backing fabric, and fabric number 6 is the center fabric.

Press fabric number 1-4 right sides together to make triangles.

Lay the triangles in the four corners on the right side of fabric number 5.

Flip over fabric number 4, so that fabric 1-4 is visible

Pin heavily, stitch and trim. I use pinking shears.

On the wrong side of the stitched and trimmed square, glue or pin fabric number 6 and the square wrong sides together.

Turn and press the square.

Front

Back

Fold the edges and pin them down.

Stitch the edges down, lifting and stitching a bit under the next edge.

Repeat with all four edges, and voila!

If you make a coaster using this tutorial I would love to know.

two in a row coaster tutorial, part 1

For this coaster you’ll need 3 templates

- One 4 inch square, this will be your finished size.
- One circle 5 ¾ inch in diameter, or a circle slightly bigger than your small square.

- One 6 ½ inch square, or a square big enough to fit your circle, this is the template you need for cutting your fabric.

If you’ll be using this template numerous times I recommend you cut it out in template plastic.

You’ll need two pieces of fabric, one for the front and one for the back both 7 inch square, and a piece of batting 7 inch square. I’ll recommend that there is some contrast between the fabrics. In this way the pattern will be more visible.

Start by cutting out the biggest square in both batting material and in front and back fabric,

the backing fabric will be the rounded edges on the front of the coaster.

Make a sandwich with front and back fabric right sides together. Place this on top of the batting.

Trace the circle onto the fabric.

Stitch around the marked circle leaving and opening for turning.

Trim as close to the seam line as possible, I use pinking shears.

Turn and press the circle, remembering to press the openings raw edges inside.

Using the 4 inch square as guide press the circles edges towards the center.

Don't use the plastic template for this, only use cardboard or paper templates when pressing.

Stitch down the rounded edges, and voila!

If you are a bit nifty, you can make the edges in different colors. (and if you do it without a nine month old on one arm, you could probably stitch it better :-)

Catching up and falling behind

I’ve finished the top for the ORBC quilt along.

I’m sorry for the bad pictures, but it’s pouring down and there has been absolutely no sun light.
I’m not ready to baste it yet, I need to get some more batting.

But I should be up to speed with this quilt along.

I made 6 more nine-patches making a grand total of 43,

I’m falling a bit behind in this quilt along I’m afraid.

I’ve been thinking about making it a lap size instead, but I’m not sure yet

Oh and I won library gal quilts SMS give away, yay for me!I haven’t heard from my second winner Patsy from the SMS give away. I’m thinking I’ll draw another winner Monday if I haven’t heard from her by then, does that seem fair to you?

making progress on Old red barn quilt along

I’m making progress with the quilt along.

I made 64 blocks.Because I used fat quarters instead of ½ yards,

I made each block of 5 strips making them 10.5 inch. square.

In this way there were less wastage.

On a different note,

Sunday stash # 5

This weeks Sunday stash is for old red barn's quilt along,

I finally found the time to start cutting the strips.

I had so many loose ends that I needed to attend first

(there still is but at least I got a few nailed – see previous post)

The fabric is 24 fat quarters of snippets by American Jane.

I think the colours are very bright and cherry

and I certainly found another favourite designer.

I bought the fabric at an UK based online store called quilterscloth
They have excellent service; I just wish they had a bigger selection.

Damsel in distress

It’s not me who are in distress but this nice little lady, who seems to be missing her hair….

I think its cold to be that bald; I better make her some hair

She’s a gift to my niece for her first birthday; I used the pattern from

Alicia Paulson’s “stitched in time”. It’s the first time I tried to make a rag doll,

it was a lot of fun, and I’m glad I got so many girls in my life

that can be gifted with this type of toy.

I also got to “try out” another book from my birthday.

If you are new at embroidery (like me) I highly recommend the doodle stitching book.
It explains the different type of stitches really well,
and have some great “how to” graphics.

My coaster swap buddy Sara has received my parcel and seems pleased with it.

I’m glad she is, I’m always a bit more nervous

when sending stuff to another craftster,

am I the only one who feels that way?

And to round this week up (…) I finished the on the spot quilt top.

I like the idea a lot, but not so much the execution.
I think I’m gonna try another method for the next circle quilt.

Maybe Anna Maria Horner's super circles.

I wish I didn’t like circles…

I wish that when I saw a circle quilt, I would do a little nod and say “Nice, but I’m more a square kinda girl” Or log cabin, or even triangles…..Sigh… But I don’t.

I love circle quilts in every shape and form, and when I see one I always want

to do something similar

But curved piecing is such a pain in the … It’s no fun, well not for me anyway….

But practise makes perfect right?

I’m halfway through this circle quilt (inspired by this one)

now I only need the counterpart with white circles.

I’m using this tutorial for the six minute circle.

Boy am I glad I signed up for kindred crafters coaster swap.

Thank you for all the nice comments and wishes in the give away post.
I had a really good birthday.

I got to pull out my fancy shoes and fancy purse and went to a movie and dinner with Kristoffer, while my sister looked after the children.

And because we had such splendid weather I even got to wear a new summer dress.

Among many things, Kristoffer gave me these books that I’ve been wanting for quite some time. I think the “Doodle-stitching” can be the beginning of a new addiction… erh hobby.

The past week has also been quite busy. I finished some more nine-patches for the one a day quilt along.

I’m up to 37 now

Retro cabin

I received this cute fabric from timeless treasure a couple a days ago. I bought it at Etsy seller “afabricoutlet”.

I just wanted to cut it up right away. It’s going to be another baby blanket.

I like the quick gratification of small quilt projects.

There where practically no wastage with this fabric bundle.

I love when it’s like that.

I also cut some extra 2.5” squares that I intended to use for the one-a-day nine patch.

But I didn't think the fabric matched the other blocks in the nine-patch very well

So inspired by this quilt, I made four patches to use with the sashing.
I’m planning on using brown sashing and maybe orange binding…?

On a totally different matter I have a question for you all; When I comment on someone else’s blog I sometime get a response on that particularly comment in my email, I like that feature very much but I can’t figure out how this is done… Do any of you know how to do this?

Geese in the forest

Well I’ve decided to take the plunge into the paper piecing pool. I made six more geese’s.

I spent most of Sunday working with them, on and off in between lunch, dinner, nap times and so on.

I’m only going to use liberty fabrics in this one, because I think it will go well with the pattern, and give the quilt an antique look.

I’ve never done paper piecing before so it’s going to be a good learner

I’m not planning on being finished in August, instead I’ll make a bunch of blocks once in a while. So it’s going to be a long term project

(I guess it is no different than a lot of my other projects since I’m still having a hard time getting around to actually finishing them)

I’ve been thinking about joining Twiddletails Geese in the forest project.

I made a trial block to see how it looks:

I like it… But paper piecing takes a long time… I thought that with a little effort I could catch up and finish with thee others in august,

I don’t know what I was thinking, I must have gone mad.

Maybe I can still finish in august.... 2010 that is.

juicy squares

I’ve finished the square in square quilt.

And I really love it.

It looks so juicy and delicious, almost edible.

At first I wanted to make it bigger but there wasn’t enough fabric left,

then I decided to just make one more block

so there could be 5 rows vertical and horizontal

It’s 46” square which make it excellent as a baby quilt or a playmat.

The back and binding are from the same fabric line.

Otherwise there haven’t been much sewing around here. Marie is teething, so instead of being here usual happy self, she is crying and whining and just wants to be in her mothers arms. And as cute as that may sound, it’s awfully hard to sew with just one arm :-)

Luckily she’s only missing the next 27 baby teeth…..

One a day quilt along

I’ve joined crazy moms "one a day nine patch quilt along". And here is my first batch, all blues this time.

I'm planning to make each nine patch of two different fabrics in the same color.

I’m using up the scraps from the color-wheel bundle; I really got good mileage out of that bundle: two whole quilts and a lot of blocks for a third. For the rest of the quilt I’m either going to use some charm packs, ore scraps from future projects.

Am I stacking coins ore laying bricks?

Well neither I’m afraid. This was supposed to have been a stacked coin quilt top. But somewhere my math went wrong and it ended up far too wide.

Probably because I don’t have a design wall, and instead I'm using my dining room table.

I simply don’t have the energy to rip it all up and rearrange them. I'll just pretend it was meant to be some sort of brick laying quilt, and give it to someone who don’t know off the mistake :-)

Color-wheel

Well, I was supposed to assemble some more quilts. I have three waiting. And I really meant to do it; honestly… But on my way doing so, I was lured in by these, just lying there awaiting my strokes with the ironer.

I’ve enlarged the pattern of Joelle’s color-wheel quilt so instead of 56 inch square it would be 84 inch. And I had to see if the fabric pieces were big enough for the template.
They were, with a lot to spare.
And then one thing led to another, and suddenly all 52 wedges were cut out. So I thought I’d just lay them in the right order. Aren’t they pretty?

Then I worried about getting them all mixed up if I didn’t sew them together right away… Ahem…
Well that was the reason I told myself (and others) anyway. It went so fast that I forgot to take any pictures of the process. But I got a pic of the finished quilt top

As all the quilts I make it is far from perfect. In this one the curved piecing was kinda difficult, it’s definitely not my favorite kind of piecing.

But it's well worth the effort

This print is one of my favorites , love the little birds

I have a good excuse for not finishing this one I don’t have enough bating and backing fabric.
So now there are 4 quilts awaiting me… And I really want to finish them.

But you know the scraps are already arranged in coordinated colors, and I thought about making a color way coin quilt inspired by this one. I’m a real sucker for color-way quilts, and it wouldn’t take to long to cut the pieces, and I could easily do some chain piecing… so it wouldn’t be time consuming at all… Hmm…Hmmm. Maybe I should just cut some of them.

Pondweed quilt

First of all thank you for all the kind comments on my entry to the quilt festival; it really makes me smile to read them.

I finished the nine-patch quilt and wanted to show it.

When I finished the nine-patch blocks I wasn’t totally satisfied with it. So inspired be this quilt, I cutted up the blocks and made it into a disappearing nine-patch.

The border is slightly darker blue than the ones used in the blocks; the binding is made of the leftovers.

The back is pieced of the original fabric and green Moda marble

It is the first time I’ve tried free motion quilting, and I’m quite satisfied with the result. Thanks to oh fransson and crazy mom quilt for their tutorials and explanations. It is also the first time I finished the binding in hand; it takes an awful lot longer, but also looks so much better..

I think the quilt resembles a pond deep in the forest with waterlillys and pondweed. Or maybe it’s more like a lawn with small puddles bathed in sunshine….Sorry if I get carried away, I’m just very happy with the outcome of the quilt.

Now if you will excuse me, I’ll go en assemble some more quilts.

Bloggers quilt festival 2009

This post is my entry to Park City girl’s quilt festival spring 2009. I’m not entering my best quilt because that is yet to come…. But I’m entering my first quilt ever.

Here’s the story: In august 2008 I was 8 months pregnant with my second Daughter Marie. Big as a house and in general discomfort, I couldn’t sleep at night, so instead I started sewing, and surfing the internet on how to make a blanket to cuddle my baby in.

And thanks to all you quilting bloggers out there I really learned allot, and came upon a pattern that was suitable as a beginner project. I know that I will continue to learn and get inspiration from you all, and that I definitely haven’t made my last quilt.

Look what the mailman brought me today….Isn’t it gorgeous?

Ever since I saw Joelle’s color wheel quilt, I knew I had to make it.

But knowing that I’m only a novice and not yet a Jedi, I ordered the color wheel bundle from Purl Soho.

And today it arrived. I love it, and I can’t wait to get started on it…..

The other fabric somehow snuck there way into the basket… Hmm… That happens a lot for me, I simply don’t understand how…

They are all from Alexander Henry. I don’t have any project in mind for it yet; I’d just thought they’d look good in my stash.

All for now. I will go look through those bundles of joy

So... I pulled some fabric, and went shopping for some more.

I bought the wild bunch range from funquilts at a fare a while ago. I love the bright colours, but I haven't been able to find thee other colour variations, so I decided to use some Jenny Beyer blenders.

I especially think the bright yellow lights up the bunch, and matches the green fabric quite well.

I'm planning a nine patch quilt, with the dark fabric as sashing. I'm looking forward to getting started. I wonder what I did with my spare time before I started sewing :-)

Hello and happy Easter

I finished my hexagon quilt top, and frankly got a bit tired of all that piecing, so I decided to sew some clothe instead, and I thought it would be fun to try and sew a jacket.

Now I only need to stich up the hems, (after unravelling a decoration seam that didn't decorate)and make button holes.

Its brown cotton twill lined with Liberty fabric. It felt good to do something else than piecing hexagons, but now I’m ready to return to quilting land…..

Here is my version of the mod sampler from oh, fransson's quilt along. I only had five different fabrics so I made the back different than the pattern.

My first daisy-chain quilt, I'm using a pattern from "Jelly Roll Quilts" author Pam & Nicky Lintott. Made from 2 fig & plum jelly rolls from the moda range.

Now it just needs sashing, backing, quilting and binding :-)

I think it is appropriate to start my blog with showing the first quilt I ever made. It was for my youngest daughter Marie. Now 7 months old.

It is a regular nine patch pattern, the back is pieced from the leftovers.

It's not a real quilt, since it hasn't been quilted. I didn't have the nerve at the time :-)

But here it is. The one that started it all. The world off patchwork and quilting really opened up to me with this blanket.
